Classic cars took over two miles of El Camino Real on Saturday night. We were out there from golden hour to closing time. Here is what it looked like.

The End of Summer Cruise runs El Camino Real between Hillsdale Mall and 3rd Avenue, and the rule is simple: the cars keep moving. No show field, no judging, no trophies. People bring what they built, drive it up and down a two mile stretch, and everybody else stands on the sidewalk and watches. We walked it from about five in the afternoon until the last cars rolled out. These are our own photos from the night.

Golden hour, before the street filled up

Early on it is quieter, and that is the best time to actually look at the cars. Owners are still wiping down chrome, hoods are up, and you can walk right along the line without weaving through anyone. The light does most of the work for you.

Dusk, when it turned into a parade

Around seven the street changed character. The parked cars started moving, the sidewalks filled in, and El Camino turned into a slow rolling parade of paint and exhaust. Not everything had four wheels, either.

After dark, headlights and neon

The last stretch was the best looking. Storefront signs came on, headlights caught the chrome, and a few cars brought their own lighting. People stayed out until the cars did.
